For a busy year I have certainly given myself a right slap with the gauntlet and entered 3 different shows. Granted the first was the annual local group show but even that was a tight job getting in for. Had all the pots in bags ready. Forgot the set-up date and meekly apologized to the group and was offered a lovely pair of lit plinths. #phew
Exhibition the second is on right now and features my Home collection. Pots inspired by Sandwich town with it's historic architecture and general quirkiness. That's up in Whitstable; oyster country!
Next I'll be in Sandwich again taking over a shop window on September. Hence the new work above. Yes, moar pots! Moar pinching and MOAR playing with natural oxide colours. I am also making a collection of sculptural 'egg' and 'pebble' forms. Nice! XD

I will be uploading a new drawing each day this year. I have no rules for this other than I will first be building a log of abstract sketches drawn in pen. These drawings will be ideas that are nothing in of themselves. I guess I am at that time when all I have is the mark and what forms I make with it I hope are new or at least unclouded by another concept, save they are attempts at recording the background static of thinking.

I have a lot of static so it should keep me busy for a while...
Please do not see this as a 'resolution to make more Art!' As with all congruence in chronology I am choosing to take the new year as an opportunity rather than an imperative.

Not a bad start to the year, lots of training but all really good and useful! Shame the resources look so ... undesigned... so I am going to do a little body-snatching and replace them with more colourful and creative examples. So nice when current pedagogy actually reflects the ideals of teaching you have held close to your heart for so long... long may this last where creativity is seen as the pinnacle of evidence for learning.

Aside from that I have made more time for examples of various ceramicy things. I worked on a solid lump of molochite white laced with cobalt and turned it into an organic cavernous shell/ear/stone. let's just see if survives a stoneware fire XD Also making more tile work. Thinking of doing various suspended tinkling shapes made from thin slivers of raw coloured clays.

I have been playing GuildWars2 and already broken the promise to myself not to engage in crafting. It is always an activity that leaves me a little hollow when engaged virtually. I actually get most satisfaction mining for the resources... maybe my working class roots poking through. Real work IS done with the hands! Otherwise the game is nice. A bit hectic at times but as a solo wanderer it has lots to offer. Why such an unsocial kitten as myself would play an MMORPG is still a mystery...

Golden Dawns

2 min read
My now summer habit of creatively adopting a nocturnal existence is once again baring strange fruits I am pleased to report. I have elected to focus on drawing this year which has brought about certain issues. For one I end up making less as the time/work ratio is frustratingly slow. I have developed more speed and focus and can complete larger drawings with less fuss but my hand aches... I have looked this up and the tendons of my index finger and thumb are at risk. I now take long breaks between an hours drawing. That sounds really naff but I do not want to risk hurting myself. If anyone has any ideas about this let me know!
The sun rises have been lovely. The recent mad weather has made for some great dawns. I would have more photos but my vista is crowded by housing... and I'm not going for a dawn walk every day ;p it's wet out there XD I did enjoy taking some more experimental shots. The best I've uploaded already. Low-light and slow-shutter work is great fun.
I am 3 hours into my latest A3 colour work. Am eager to get on with it...

I have been experimenting with slumped glass. not directly, that would be silly and painful... but have tried out melting glass things :D and have enjoyed the process thus far. Nout good enough to put up as yet but will be exploring some plaster & flint moulds when I can convince my school that a tub of crushed quartz that is highly toxic is necessary.
1 day left of school. I have 1 lesson tomorrow and yes, I am the sort that will make them work... but may put some Myazaki on in the background. I may even let them take turns at throwing... leave a jolly lovely mess for my epic cleaner to sort out... nah, I'm not like that... but she is epic, the pottery looks great now. I'll no doubt be in over the summer to make more things... will be slumping some beer bottles I found...
